How come the moon shines?
I saw Saturn tonight. I also saw a nebula and the moon ... up close through a telescope. Jen and I went to "open to the public" night at Boston University's observatory. We went to the roof of the science building where they have 2 telescopes set up and focused on different things depending on what time of year it is. Tonight we saw the Orion Nebula, Saturn, and the moon.
We got to the top of that building and I turned into a 5 year old kid. I stood in wide-eyed wonder as the host of the night taught us about the stars and their formation. Question after question about the universe ran through my mind. I came up with several intelligent questions, but this is the one that came out of my mouth, "What makes the moon shine?" I'm telling you, I turned into a little kid up there! I'm glad I just quietly posed this question to Jen, who gave me an answer she thought made sense. And she was right. The closest rock to us here on earth reflects the sun, and therefore provides us with light in the night.
I'm infinitely amazed by the system we are all a part of - the laws all in motion. Studying astronomy always proves to be a spiritual experience for me. I marvel at the miracle that is space and creation.
